When you’re in the market to buy a new home, or you’re planning a renovation of your current home, it’s helpful to have a general idea of what you’re drawn to in terms of décor and design style. You may like a little of everything or not have one set style, but most people do have a general décor concept they find more appealing than others.  Having some idea of your design style can help you choose the right home for you, or help you understand what renovations you might want to do after you buy a new home.  The following are some of the most popular home décor styles right now.

Transitional

Undoubtedly, transitional is one of the most sought-after home décor styles for a few reasons. Transitional style incorporates both traditional and modern elements for a nice balance. Transitional design style often integrates neutral color palettes and combines both masculine and feminine elements. The sense of balance is what so many people appreciate with transitional style.

Coastal

Coastal style can go by different names, including Hamptons design style or nautical style. Coastal décor incorporates lots of natural light and neutral colors. It’s inspired by nature and the sea. As far as the actual layout of a coastal-inspired home, you’ll see open floor plans and big, airy multi-use spaces.  Coastal-style homes might also have wide plank floors, and they encompass a sense of lived-in charm and warmth.

Scandinavian Minimalism

Scandinavian style can also be interchangeable with a minimalist décor style. Scandinavian design is about clean, simple lines, minimal accessories, and an appreciation for organic materials. Many of the things you’ll see in a Scandinavian home are contemporary, and the focus is on function and proportion. Colors are usually centered around white and gray.

Farmhouse

The farmhouse style isn’t new, but it’s been reintroduced thanks to the popularity of shows like Fixer Upper. Farmhouse style can be rustic and traditional, but many people put their own twist on it with more modern elements or even features you would typically see in Scandinavian design. Farmhouse design will include distressed wood and textured upholstery like linen. There is a focus on the use of greenery as accessories since farmhouse living is so often associated with nature and the outdoors.  Sometimes farmhouse style can be intermixed with styles like shabby chic or French country design style, both of which capture a sense of comfort and lived-in relaxation.

Modern Urban

Modern style has similarities to minimalism in that there are clean lines and limited accessories. Urban modern is its own subcategory of modern design style. Urban modern décor is similar to what you would see in a big city loft home, even if it’s now found in suburban homes. For example, you might see the use of luxe materials like leather paired with exposed pipes and ductwork. Sometimes modern urban style will also add vintage or antique items for a unique and unexpected twist, and the ceilings are often high with large, unobstructed windows.

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern style is an ode to the 1950s and early 60s. It’s experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly among Millennial homebuyers. Mid-century modern style has contemporary features and uses bright, bold colors. There are a lot of geometric shapes, and furniture tends to be simple in its design and function.  Sometimes you might not even be sure what your design and décor style is, but the homebuying process can help you narrow down what you love and what you feel would make you happy to come home to every day.
