7 Decorating Trends that Deserve to Resurface

Decorating is a fickle thing. One moment, something’s all the rage, and the next, it’s an instant sign of a dated home. Sometimes, however, as is the case with fashion there are decorating and interior design trends that come back around. The following are some of the trends that we’d like to see making a comeback in 2020.

1. The 50s-Style Den

Before everyone had a massive flat-screen TV hanging on their wall, the living room of a home was called a den. It was often a space where people would come together to relax, read, listen to music and talk to one another. The 1950s was really the last decade of the true den because, after that point, televisions and home entertainment started to progress and become the focal point of these areas. It would be great to see a move back toward dens with ample seating space and a layout conducive to conversations.

2. Banquette Seating in the Kitchen

Many people don’t have a ton of space for dining in their homes, particularly in urban areas where homes have significantly less square footage. The addition of banquette seating as a trend popular in the 1980s and 90s, but it also would work well if it were to make a comeback. It makes smart use of space in kitchens and gives not only more areas for dining, but additional storage can be placed under the bench of a banquette.

3. Wood Cabinets

We’ve moved away from natural wood cabinets in recent years and people tend to prefer painted cabinets that are bright white or even cabinets that are lacquer or made of engineered materials. There is something to be said for the beauty and durability of natural wood finishes for kitchen cabinets, however.

4. Rattan and Bamboo Furniture

You might associate rattan and bamboo furniture with the 1970s and 80s, but it’s increasingly popular now, in an updated way. Rattan and bamboo furniture bring a natural, textured element into a home, plus these pieces are durable and often eco-friendly.

5. Bold Wallpaper

Until the early 2000s, many homes had bold wallpaper with florals and other patterns. However, at the start of the new millennium, the use of wallpaper in general and particularly coverings with bold patterns started to be seen as dated and out-of-style. Now, wallpaper with large and often colorful patterns can make a beautiful accent in a small bathroom or another area of your home where you want something distinctive. The growing popularity of peel-and-stick wallpapers has made it even easier to add something bold to your wall without the full commitment of traditional wallpaper.

6. Tapestries

Interestingly, home design is moving away from stark industrialism and completely modern design and toward more classic, traditional details. Many homeowners and buyers are looking to the warmth that traditional design can bring, and tapestries are something that is once again popping up in design magazines. Tapestries can bring nature into a space, as well as warmth and texture.

7. Brass Hardware

Finally, there was a time just a few years ago when the presence of brass hardware would send a homebuyer running.
